Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and ChessTeacher.org ("we", "us") for live chess lessons and classes booked through ChessTeacher.org. By creating an account you confirm that you are either 18 or older and booking for yourself, or 18 or older and the parent or legal guardian of the student under 18 you book for.

Who books

• Students under 18: a parent or legal guardian creates the account, books, pays and receives all messages. The student only joins the lesson. All communication goes through the parent.
• Adults (18+): book and pay for themselves.
• Youth (under 18) and adult group classes are always separate. A student can only be booked into a group for their age.

Lessons and classes

• Private lessons are one student with the coach, 1 hour. Group classes are 1 hour, with up to 10 students.
• Lessons use the shared chess board in our app. The video call, if any, happens in a separate service agreed with you.
• There is no chat between the coach and students in the app. Parents of students under 18 are welcome to sit in on any lesson.
• The lesson opens in your account 15 minutes before it starts.
• The free trial is one free group class per student. We may decline a trial that looks like a repeat for the same student.

Prices and payment

• Prices are shown on our website and before you pay. Payment is by card through Stripe; we never see your card number.
• A booking is confirmed once the payment succeeds. A time is held for you for up to 35 minutes while you pay.
• Weekly plans reserve the same times every week and are charged automatically each week, before that week starts, until you cancel. If a weekly payment fails, that week's seats are released.

Cancelling and refunds

• Single lessons and classes: cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund. Within 24 hours of the start, please contact us; refunds are then at our discretion.
• Weekly plans: you can cancel anytime before the next week begins; you won't be charged for that week or after.
• Once a paid week's first session has started: sessions in that week that haven't happened yet are 50% refundable if you cancel them at least 24 hours before they start. Sessions that already took place are not refundable.
• If we cancel a lesson or class, you get a full refund for it automatically.
• If a student doesn't attend a booked session without cancelling, it is not refunded.
• Refunds go back to the card used, usually within 5–10 business days.

Your account

• Keep your password private. Students under 18 must not be given the account password.
• You can delete your account at any time in the app (after cancelling upcoming lessons and plans).
• We may suspend accounts that misuse the service or put students at risk.

Privacy

Our Privacy Policy, including the children's privacy notice, explains what we collect and why.

Liability

Lessons are provided with reasonable care and skill. To the extent the law allows, our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for the lesson or week concerned. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law.

Changes and law

We may update these terms; if a change matters, we'll ask you to agree again in the app. These terms are governed by the laws of the U.S. state where ChessTeacher.org is based.
